The Frank H. Booze, III Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in honor of Frank Booze who died in a tragic car accident in 1974. Scholarships are awarded to rising seniors of VA Kappa "that have contributed most to the growth and fraternal spirit of Sigma Phi Epsilon" (quoted from current working agreement with Sigma Phi Epsilon National Headquarters.)
Please read the following memories of Frank as submitted by some of his closer brothers:
"I can’t believe it has been 30 years since Frank Booze died. If anyone that went to Tech didn’t go to summer school, they missed a great experience. I know. I went 5 times. Summer in Blacksburg is lazy, slow, romantic, and about the most fun I ever had. Frank was my roommate one summer, and besides school, we would grab some women and go tubing on New River, picnic in the mountains at the waterfalls, go visit Pugh out in Floyd County, hang out at the Sig Ep house, and keep Greeks in business until Cunningham returned in the Fall. The days seemed to last forever. Frank loved music, and we listened to Paul McCartney, Chicago, David Bowie, and Led Zepplin. Frank had Coke bottle glasses, and always had a smile that looked like he just got caught with Zartmans’ girlfriend in Ricky Longs’ bed. You couldn’t look at him and not feel good. He was a rising Senior in Electrical Engineering, so he was very bright, but everyone loved his “aw shucks” demeanor and Roanoke/Salem drawl. I hope all of us have those special friends in our life who would drop everything and come to our assistance when we are in trouble. Frank Booze was a special friend." John Lawson, Class of 1975
"I am honored to tell you a little about Brother Frank Booze who we lost almost exactly 30 years ago, during his senior year. He was the first loss for the Chapter.
If you go by the memorial to Frank in the old rose garden at the house, you’ll see the inscription “Always his own man, Always everyone’s brother”. I wrote those words back then and I think it best describes Frank as I remember him today.
Frank was the kind of person you liked being around. He was a great and loyal friend and Brother. When you needed someone to help you out or straighten you out, Frank was there. When we got into a tight spot Frank would just say, “Just be cool CT” and always would find a way out. In all the time I knew him, I don’t remember one time when he had an argument with anyone.
Although he wasn’t a star athlete or chapter officer, Frank represented the heart of the Fraternity. He always participated. He made sure he knew everyone. If you were his Brother, he was your friend for life. He would always strive to do his best at whatever task was at hand.
I know Frank would be honored to have a Chapter scholarship in his name.
Frank was the one who introduced me to SPE. He was and always will be the best friend I ever had." Chuck Tacey, Class of 1975
"I was Frank's little brother and we shared an apartment with Frank, Chuck and Ed that last year. I still remember how bad I felt when Chuck called me to tell me that there had been an accident as I was not there that night. Frank was a great brother he got me through several tough times. We were EE majors and shared late nights of study and trips to the punch card machines,as well as good times at VAKappa. But one of the most vivid memories, is Saturday mornings with Pink Panther cartoons and Frank eating runny fried eggs over grits."
Jim Selvey, Class of 1975
